Selecting the "Encrypt this shared folder" and entering and confirming the encryption key (password) will encrypt the data stored in the Time Backup shared folder. If you want to enable the Recycle Bin you would do so here. Here I also like to check the boxes for "Hide this shared folder in My Network Places" as well as "Hide folders and files from users without permissions" Be sure to select the correct "Location" volume where you want to create the shared folder Here you will enter the name of the folder that will server as the destination for the Time Backup. Click the "Create" button at the top of the window From the DSM main page, click on Control Panel, then click on "Shared Folder" You may want to schedule your backups accordingly or at least keep an eye on CPU and NAS performance during the backup process to ensure no other services are being impacted. This doesn't appear to be an issue when going over WAN, likely because the WAN connection cannot support the same speeds as a local network would. The Time Backup can only function in one direction.Ĥ) If you choose to not throttle the bandwidth usage for your backup and your Time Backup target is on your local network, the process will max out the CPUs on both NAS devices. You cannot create symbiotic backups where each NAS has a backup to the other NAS. This restriction does not apply to regular network backups so if you are NOT using the Time Backup feature, then you are allowed to use any other account to connect to the backup device.ģ) Also note that the backup process is only "one way". Synology is aware and have stated that they would consider adding this other admin group account functionality in a future release of DSM. Only the default "admin" account can be used. You cannot create another account in the admin group and use that account. In other words, if you wanted to use 1 NAS as backup for 2 other Synology NAS devices, but only one of those was to have Time Backup and the other a regular backup, you wouldn't be able to do this.Ģ) The Time Backup process will only work when using the default "admin" account. There are a few things to keep in mind when setting these up.ġ) Setting up a Time Backup will mean that you cannot setup any other kind of backup to the NAS. This was the most current version of the DSM software that I could install on a Hyper-V vm at the time of this writing. While this is not the most current version of DSM, the process is the same. The version of DSM used for this tutorial is 5.0-4028. This how-to assumes that you have already setup your SSL certificates on both devices, especially of you will be doing an offsite backup. This could be useful in the event of a change to a file and you need to retrieve a file from 4hrs ago or to help in the recovery of data after a Crypto variant infection. That is setting up a scheduled incremental backup from one Synology NAS to another Synology NAS that would allow recovery of data based on snapshots in time. You must do some things before backing up to a remote NAS.I've been getting a few emails asking for information on how to setup a Synology Time Backup. Set Everything Up Before Backing Up Synology to Remote NAS It’s one of the most convenient backup options, especially if you must do this regularly and constantly make critical updates. You can instantly secure your files and restore them if needed. That makes remote NAS a perfect option for backing up other devices. Most of the services and tools we use today are online, and this kind of setup allows you to move data from these applications to your NAS device directly. Hackers must go through multiple layers of devices and protocols before accessing your device. On the other hand, remote access allows you to store files while on the go if you’re using your NAS for work and have to store new data constantly.Įven though setting up remote access is more complex than other methods, this option is also more secure. Remote access is a massive benefit for anyone storing essential data on their NAS, which is especially true if you’re constantly adding and saving new data. Why Backup Your Synology NAS to a Remote NAS Using QuickConnect to create a customized IP address or ID and connect with a remote NAS.Using DDNS to set up an IP address hostname for your network-attached storage.Using port forwarding and mapping ports on routers to the desired IP address.
